Chess960 for coaches and clubs
Everything below is free, works in a browser and needs no account. Use it in lessons, for homework or at a club evening.
Three scenarios for organizers
Trial game
Already available 10 minutes: create a game with a friend at 10+5, send the link or QR code and play from any of the 960 setups. Nothing to install, no account.
Club evening
Already available Games by link with Undo Chess tokens, 1 or 2 each (chosen when the game is created), and printed cards of balanced start pairs for the boards or a demonstration screen.
Needs development A tournament table and pairings for the evening on the website.
Reviewing an unusual position
Already available Pick a balanced pair or any of the 960 setups: its page shows the engine analysis of the start. Play it out by link; a finished game keeps a move-by-move engine review.
Needs development A shared review board where the coach comments for the whole group.
Puzzles for homework
Puzzles are grouped by theme. Each puzzle page shows the goal of the task (for example, “White to move · Mate in 2”) and, after solving, an explanation of the solution. Send a student a link to a theme or to a single puzzle.
Lessons from zero
Lessons start from the board and how each piece moves, then explain Chess960 itself: the setup rules and castling, with a separate castling trainer. The 1000-day course gives a short block on one topic per day.
A board on your club website
The free CH960 Chess Widget puts a playable board on any website: a game against the computer or with a friend, classical chess or Chess960. One line of code is enough:
<script src="https://ch960.com/widget.js" data-variant="all" data-theme="auto"></script>
Remote lessons: a game by link
Create a game, send the link or QR code to a student and play from any starting position — the student opens the link in a browser, nothing to install.
Undo Chess: an experimental friendly format for club events
Undo Chess is an experimental friendly game format. Each player has tokens; you may take a move back only by giving a token to the opponent. It is a format for friendly games and club evenings, not a training method. The rules page has a short animated example and an exercise to try it on a real board.
A token is the right to take back your previous move together with your opponent's reply. Once used, it passes to your opponent. Time is not returned.
Made by Roman Morozov. CH960 is a free Chess960 platform: this website and an Android app on Google Play; papers on Undo Chess and on balanced start pairs are published on Zenodo. [email protected] · About the author
How to play with different setups
White sets up the pieces by position No. 4, Black by position No. 196, mirrored on their own side; the pawns stand as usual.
Moves as usual: White starts; everything else follows the Chess960 rules.
Example: a printable card for pair 4 – 196
