How to recognize this tactic
A back-rank mate strikes when the king is boxed in by its own pawns and the back rank is under-defended. Check whether a rook or queen can reach the first rank with check and whether the only defender can be deflected or overloaded.
Deflection drags a defender away from its duty. Identify the enemy piece that guards a key square or mate, then force it to move — with a check, a capture or a threat it must answer — and strike where it no longer defends.
A discovered attack fires when one piece steps aside and unmasks the piece behind it. Look for your own units that block a rook, bishop or queen: moving the front piece — ideally with a threat of its own — springs two attacks in one move.
Mate in two usually opens with a forcing move — a check, a capture or an unstoppable threat — that strips the king of squares or defenders, so the follow-up mate becomes unavoidable. Look for the first move that leaves the opponent only losing replies.
General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.
The position in numbers
White are ahead by 2 points of material (17 against 15; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.
The white king stands on f1, the black king on g7.
It is Black to move on move 26, with 24 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.
White keeps 6 pawns, Black 4. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): e — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for Black: c, d, f.
The Black king has 3 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.
Solución y explicación
Línea principal
26... Nd2+ 27. Kg1 Rxe1#
Por qué funciona
- ¡Gran jugada! caballo a d2 mantiene la presión (#1).
- ¡Gran jugada! torre a e1 mantiene la presión (#).
- La línea termina en mate forzado en 2.
- Si en cambio Kg1, entonces Rxe1# y es mate.
Move by move
- 26… Nd2+ — caballo to d2 with check
- 27. Kg1 — rey to g1
- Rxe1# — torre to e1 (capture) and it is checkmate
