Learn · Chapter 1. What Is Chess960

You're Ready for 960!

Let's tally up: you know the pieces, you tell check from checkmate, you pull off castling-960 even from adjacent squares. One last test remains — from me personally. I don't forgive laziness, but I respect courage. One move — and I'll sign off on your readiness.

Mate in one. The black king is locked on the eighth rank: his own pawns on f7, g7, h7 have blocked every exit — the classic trap beginners build for themselves. Your rook on a1 is staring down an empty file. Draw the conclusion and show some class.

Your move — make it on the board

Back-rank mate. Old as the world — and it never fails, even in 960.

Congratulations — no sarcasm, which is rare for me. Chapter complete, the basics are in your hands. Two paths from here: Training with the mentors if you want to polish the details, or straight to a local game if you can't wait to fight. The board is waiting. Don't keep it bored.

This is a preview — the full interactive lesson is in the app.
