White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king f1, queen h1, rook b1 g1, knight f3 e6, pawn a2 b2 e2 f2 g3 d4 g5.

Black: king f7, queen h8, rook d8 g8, bishop f4, knight c4 e8, pawn d5 h5 c6 g6 a7 b7 e7.

13 white and 14 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 13.

The position in numbers

Black are ahead by 3 points of material (32 against 35; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on f1, the black king on f7.

It is White to move on move 13, with 32 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 7 pawns, Black 7. No file is fully open, so the heavy pieces have to be pried in. Half-open for White: c, h.

The White king has 3 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

13. Nxd8+ Kg7 14. Ne6+ Kf7 15. Nxf4

Why it works

  • Great move! knight to d8 keeps the pressure (+5.2).
  • Spot on — knight to e6 (+5.2).
  • Precise: knight to f4 is the top choice (+5.5).
  • You win a piece — the rook.
  • If instead Kg7, then Ne6+ and you win the rook.

Move by move

  • 13. Nxd8+ — knight to d8 (capture) with check

Types in this puzzle

Hanging piece

A piece is left without protection — just take it.

A hanging piece is simply an unprotected piece you can take for free. It sounds primitive, yet most amateur games are decided exactly this way. Build the habit: before every move, sweep the board and note every undefended piece, yours and theirs. The classic mistake is hunting for a brilliant combination when all you need to do is bend down and pick up the gift.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #180.

SP-180 · BastionScout — King off-centre on c or f with a knight starting on the rim (a/h).

The king starts on f1, the rooks on d1 and g1, the queen on h1.

Castling short simply swaps the two pieces: the king on f1 and the rook on g1 trade places.

The bishops stand on b1 and c1; their long diagonals reach h7 and h6 once the c- and d-pawns step aside.

The pawn on e2, f2 is defended by the king alone — the same soft spot f2 is in the classical setup.

The setup belongs to the BastionScout family; read right to left it becomes position 782.

The engine's main line opens with d4, putting a pawn straight into the centre.
