White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king e1, queen h5, rook c1, bishop b1, knight e4, pawn a2 b2 d2 g2 h2 c4 g6.

Black: king e8, queen g7, rook c5, bishop b8 g8, knight h8, pawn e5 a7 b7 d7.

12 white and 10 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 14.

The position in numbers

Material is level — 27 points of pieces on each side (pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9).

The white king stands on e1, the black king on e8.

It is White to move on move 14, with 38 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 7 pawns, Black 4. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): f — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: e.

Black hold the bishop pair, an edge in open lines. The White king has 4 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

14. Nxc5 e4 15. Bxe4 Be5 16. Rc3

Why it works

  • Great move! knight to c5 keeps the pressure (+5.5).
  • Spot on — bishop to e4 (+5.5).
  • A natural move: rook to c3.
  • You win a piece — the rook.
  • If instead e4, then Bxe4 and you win the rook.

Move by move

  • 14. Nxc5 — knight to c5 (capture)

Hanging piece

A piece is left without protection — just take it.

A hanging piece is simply an unprotected piece you can take for free. It sounds primitive, yet most amateur games are decided exactly this way. Build the habit: before every move, sweep the board and note every undefended piece, yours and theirs. The classic mistake is hunting for a brilliant combination when all you need to do is bend down and pick up the gift.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #332.

SP-332 · ThroneScout — The king starts on d or e while at least one knight begins in a corner.

The king starts on e1, the rooks on c1 and f1, the queen on d1.

The kingside rook already stands on f1, so castling short moves only the king, from e1 to g1.

The bishops stand on b1 and g1; their long diagonals reach h7 and a7 once the c- and f-pawns step aside.

The second rank carries 2 pawns with no defender at all: b2, g2.

The setup belongs to the ThroneScout family; read right to left it becomes position 348.

The engine's main line opens with f4.
