Chess960 twist: use the unusual starting setup of the pieces.

White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

An uncastled king in the centre is a standing target. Look for ways to open the central files and diagonals against it with checks and threats before it can shelter — every tempo the king spends in the middle is a chance for a combination.

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king d1, queen h4, rook b1 g1, bishop c1 f1, knight e1 c2, pawn a2 b2 d2 f2 c4 e4 g4.

Black: king d8, queen h8, rook g5 b8, bishop d7 f8, knight b6 e8, pawn c5 d6 a7 b7 e7 f7 h7.

15 white and 15 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 8.

The position in numbers

Material is level — 38 points of pieces on each side (pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9).

The white king stands on d1, the black king on d8.

It is White to move on move 8, with 34 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 7 pawns, Black 7. No file is fully open, so the heavy pieces have to be pried in. Half-open for White: h.

The White king has 1 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

8. Qxg5 Bg7 9. Qh4 Bc6 10. g5

Why it works

  • Great move! queen to g5 keeps the pressure (+4.5).
  • queen to h4 develops smoothly.
  • A natural move: pawn to g5.
  • You win a piece — the rook.
  • If instead Bg7, then b3 and you win the rook.

Move by move

  • 8. Qxg5 — queen to g5 (capture)

Types in this puzzle

Hanging piece

A piece is left without protection — just take it.

A hanging piece is simply an unprotected piece you can take for free. It sounds primitive, yet most amateur games are decided exactly this way. Build the habit: before every move, sweep the board and note every undefended piece, yours and theirs. The classic mistake is hunting for a brilliant combination when all you need to do is bend down and pick up the gift.

Uncastled king

The king lingered in the middle — punish the delay.

Punishing the uncastled king: your opponent delayed castling, and now his king is stuck on its starting square under fire. In Chess960 this is deadlier than in classical chess — the king may start in the center or near the edge, and the familiar defensive setups simply do not apply. The signs: the victim still holds castling rights, and the files toward his king are half-open. Open lines before the king manages to hide.

Early queen raid

From an odd starting square the queen raids before defences exist.

The early queen raid: from an odd starting square the queen bursts into the game before any defense exists. In classical chess an early queen sortie gets punished, but in Chess960 it sometimes hits squares that literally no one can defend. The sign: within a move or two the queen reaches an unprotected pawn or piece near the enemy king. First check whether the queen can be chased with tempo — otherwise the raid just loses time.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #278.

SP-278 · ThroneScout — The king starts on d or e while at least one knight begins in a corner.

The king starts on d1, the rooks on b1 and g1, the queen on h1.

Castling ends where it always does: king to g1 and rook to f1 on the short side, king to c1 and rook to d1 on the long one.

The bishops stand on c1 and f1; their long diagonals reach h6 and a6 once the d- and e-pawns step aside.

The second rank carries 2 pawns with no defender at all: a2, f2.

The setup belongs to the ThroneScout family; read right to left it becomes position 582.

The engine's main line opens with Nb3, bringing the knight out to b3.
