How to recognize this tactic
In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.
Early Chess960 traps punish natural but careless development. Look for a forcing move that exploits a piece the opponent has just placed on a poor square — a fork, a pin or a threat that wins material before either side is fully developed.
From some Chess960 setups a bishop or queen rakes a long diagonal straight from move one. Trace those long-range lines into the enemy camp: a single opened file or diagonal can create an immediate pin, skewer or mating threat.
This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.
General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.
Position on the board
White: king c1, queen h1, rook a1 f1, bishop d1, knight e1 b3, pawn b2 c2 d2 e2 g2 h2 f4.
Black: king b8, queen h8, rook f8, bishop b6 g8, knight d6 a8, pawn a4 c6 d7 e7 f7 g7 h7.
14 white and 14 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 7.
The position in numbers
White are ahead by 2 points of material (35 against 33; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.
The white king stands on c1, the black king on b8.
It is White to move on move 7, with 25 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.
White keeps 7 pawns, Black 7. No file is fully open, so the heavy pieces have to be pried in. Half-open for White: a.
Black hold the bishop pair, an edge in open lines. The White king has 1 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.
Solution & explanation
Main line
7. Rxa4 f5 8. Nd3 Kc7 9. c3
Why it works
- Great move! rook to a4 keeps the pressure (+2.9).
- knight to d3 develops smoothly.
- A natural move: pawn to c3.
- You reach a winning position (+3.0).
- If instead f6, then c3 and you stay on top.
Move by move
- 7. Rxa4 — rook to a4 (capture)
Types in this puzzle
Hanging piece
A piece is left without protection — just take it.
A hanging piece is simply an unprotected piece you can take for free. It sounds primitive, yet most amateur games are decided exactly this way. Build the habit: before every move, sweep the board and note every undefended piece, yours and theirs. The classic mistake is hunting for a brilliant combination when all you need to do is bend down and pick up the gift.
Early trap
In the first moves of a fresh setup a trap already snaps shut.
An early trap is a tactic that snaps shut within the first moves: an unfamiliar setup hides shots that classical openings never produce. Examine every starting position with fresh eyes — which pieces already aim at each other, what hangs after the first pawn moves. Moves that feel "safe" from classical habit can lose on the spot here. Chess960 has no opening theory; it has alertness from move one.
Long-range opener
From its unusual home square a long-range piece strikes across the board.
The long-range opener: a bishop, rook or queen strikes across the whole board straight from its starting area. In Chess960 the long-range pieces sit on unfamiliar squares, and a single pawn move can uncover a shot deep into the enemy camp. In the opening, trace with your eyes the diagonals and files of every long-range piece — yours and theirs. The mistake is pushing a pawn without checking whose line you have just opened.
