White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king c1, queen c5, rook g1 d2, bishop d5, knight b5, pawn c2 a4 e4 d6.

Black: king b8, queen c3, rook f8, bishop h5, knight b6, pawn a7 d7 h7.

10 white and 8 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 33.

The position in numbers

White are ahead by 6 points of material (29 against 23; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on c1, the black king on b8.

It is White to move on move 33, with 46 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 4 pawns, Black 3. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): b, f, g — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: h.

The White king has 1 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

33. Qxc3 Nxd5 34. exd5 Rc8 35. Qd4

Why it works

  • Best move. queen to c3 is exactly what the engine plays (#4).
  • Spot on — pawn to d5 (#4).
  • A natural move: queen to d4.
  • You win a piece — the queen.
  • If instead Nxd5, then Qc5 and you win the queen.

Move by move

  • 33. Qxc3 — queen to c3 (capture)

Types in this puzzle

Hanging piece

A piece is left without protection — just take it.

A hanging piece is simply an unprotected piece you can take for free. It sounds primitive, yet most amateur games are decided exactly this way. Build the habit: before every move, sweep the board and note every undefended piece, yours and theirs. The classic mistake is hunting for a brilliant combination when all you need to do is bend down and pick up the gift.

Mate defense

Mate is threatened — parry it and stay on top.

Mate defense: your opponent is one move from mating you — but it is your turn, and that changes everything. Find the defense that kills the mating threat while keeping your advantage: often a check or a counter-threat that leaves no time for the mate. First name the exact square where the mate would land — otherwise you are defending blind. The mistake is playing a "defensive" move that does not actually remove the threat.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #90.

SP-90 · ThroneScout — King on a central file (d/e) with a knight starting on the rim (a/h).

The king starts on d1, the rooks on c1 and g1, the queen on h1.

The bishops stand on e1 and f1; their long diagonals reach a5 and a6 once the d- and e-pawns step aside.

The second rank carries 2 pawns with no defender at all: a2, b2.

The setup belongs to the ThroneScout family; read right to left it becomes position 869.
