White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king c1, rook e1, bishop a1, pawn a2 d2 d3 h5.

Black: king c7, bishop f3 h8, knight d4, pawn b3 e6 d7 g7.

7 white and 8 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 26.

The position in numbers

Black are ahead by 1 points of material (12 against 13; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on c1, the black king on c7.

It is White to move on move 26, with 18 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 4 pawns, Black 4. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): c, f — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: b, e, g.

Black hold the bishop pair, an edge in open lines. The White king has 2 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

26. Bxd4 bxa2 27. h6 gxh6 28. Bxh8

Why it works

  • Great move! bishop to d4 keeps the pressure (+3.8).
  • Spot on — pawn to h6 (+3.7).
  • Strong! bishop to h8 is the sharp choice (+3.6).
  • You win a piece — the bishop.
  • If instead bxa2, then h6 and you stay on top.

Move by move

  • 26. Bxd4 — bishop to d4 (capture)
  • bxa2 — pawn to a2 (capture)
  • 27. h6 — pawn to h6
  • gxh6 — pawn to h6 (capture)
  • 28. Bxh8 — bishop to h8 (capture)

Types in this puzzle

Relative pin

A piece shields a more valuable one behind it — moving it loses material.

In a relative pin the piece shields not its king but something valuable behind it, usually the queen. Moving is legal but costly, because the piece behind falls. Look for three units on one line: your long-range piece, a cheaper enemy piece, and an expensive one hiding behind. Beware the classic trap — a relatively pinned piece can still move with check or a bigger threat, so verify before you cash in.

Endgame tactic

Tactics live in the endgame too — strike while material is scarce.

Tactics do not retire when the queens come off: forks, pins and double attacks live on in the endgame. With so little material left, every tactical loss is almost always decisive. The signs are the usual ones — undefended pieces, king and piece on one line, a pawn about to promote. Even in a "technical" ending, scan for a shot before every move, both yours and your opponent's.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #627.

SP-627 · ThroneGuard — Both knights start on inner files (b–g) while the king sits centrally on d or e — one of 204 positions filed here.

The king starts on d1, the rooks on b1 and f1, the queen on e1.

The kingside rook already stands on f1, so castling short moves only the king, from d1 to g1.

A bishop starts in the corner on a1: it has a single diagonal, which the b-pawn unlocks, running out to h8.

One second-rank pawn starts with no defender at all: h2.

The setup belongs to the ThroneGuard family; read right to left it becomes position 227.

The engine's main line opens with b3.
