White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king e2, rook b6, pawn a3 c4 g4 e5 g6.

Black: king d7, bishop f5, pawn a5 c5.

7 white and 4 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 40.

The position in numbers

White are ahead by 5 points of material (10 against 5; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on e2, the black king on d7.

It is White to move on move 40, with 24 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 5 pawns, Black 2. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): b, d, f, h — natural highways for the rooks and queen.

The White king has 7 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

40. gxf5 Kc7 41. g7 Kxb6 42. f6

Why it works

  • Best move. pawn to f5 is exactly what the engine plays (#5).
  • pawn to g7 develops smoothly.
  • A natural move: pawn to f6.
  • You win decisive material (+15.0).
  • If instead a4, then Rd6+ and you win the bishop.

Move by move

  • 40. gxf5 — pawn to f5 (capture)

Types in this puzzle

Hanging piece

A piece is left without protection — just take it.

A hanging piece is simply an unprotected piece you can take for free. It sounds primitive, yet most amateur games are decided exactly this way. Build the habit: before every move, sweep the board and note every undefended piece, yours and theirs. The classic mistake is hunting for a brilliant combination when all you need to do is bend down and pick up the gift.

Passed pawn

Nothing can stop the passer — escort it to the last rank.

A passed pawn has no enemy pawns in front of it or on the neighboring files: only pieces can stop it. Check who can blockade the pawn or catch it with the king — if nobody can, the pawn is worth a whole piece. Push the passer with your pieces supporting it, and put your rook behind it. The beginner's mistake is shoving the pawn forward unprotected, straight into a capture.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #604.

SP-604 · ThroneScout — A knight starts on the edge (a/h) and the king sits centrally on d or e; the mirror twin stays in this family too.

The king starts on e1, the rooks on a1 and f1, the queen on c1.

The kingside rook already stands on f1, so castling short moves only the king, from e1 to g1.

The bishops stand on b1 and g1; their long diagonals reach h7 and a7 once the c- and f-pawns step aside.

One second-rank pawn starts with no defender at all: g2.

The setup belongs to the ThroneScout family; read right to left it becomes position 268.

The engine's main line opens with f4.
