White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king e3, rook h1, bishop b2 e2, pawn a2 c2 b3 f4 e7.

Black: king e8, rook b8, bishop g4, knight d4, pawn c5 h5 b6 a7.

9 white and 8 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 31.

The position in numbers

White are ahead by 1 points of material (16 against 15; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on e3, the black king on e8.

It is White to move on move 31, with 34 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 5 pawns, Black 4. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): d, g — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: h.

White hold the bishop pair, an edge in open lines. The White king has 4 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

31. Bxg4 hxg4 32. Rh8+ Kxe7 33. Rxb8

Why it works

  • Great move! bishop to g4 keeps the pressure (+5.5).
  • Spot on — rook to h8 (+5.8).
  • Strong! rook to b8 is the sharp choice (+6.1).
  • You win a piece — the rook.
  • If instead hxg4, then Rh8+ and you stay on top.

Move by move

  • 31. Bxg4 — bishop to g4 (capture)
  • hxg4 — pawn to g4 (capture)
  • 32. Rh8+ — rook to h8 with check
  • Kxe7 — king to e7 (capture)
  • 33. Rxb8 — rook to b8 (capture)

Types in this puzzle

Skewer

A line attack forces the valuable piece to move, exposing the one behind it.

A skewer is a pin turned inside out: the valuable piece stands in front and something cheaper hides behind it. The big piece must step aside, and you collect the one that was sheltering in its shadow. Scan for the enemy king or queen sharing a file, rank or diagonal with another enemy piece. The deadliest version comes with check — the king moves, the rook behind it dies.

Endgame tactic

Tactics live in the endgame too — strike while material is scarce.

Tactics do not retire when the queens come off: forks, pins and double attacks live on in the endgame. With so little material left, every tactical loss is almost always decisive. The signs are the usual ones — undefended pieces, king and piece on one line, a pawn about to promote. Even in a "technical" ending, scan for a shot before every move, both yours and your opponent's.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #645.

SP-645 · ThroneScout — Centre-file king, rim knight: 204 of the 960 positions share this pattern.

The king starts on e1, the rooks on a1 and f1, the queen on g1.

The kingside rook already stands on f1, so castling short moves only the king, from e1 to g1.

The bishops stand on c1 and d1; their long diagonals reach h6 and h5 once the d- and e-pawns step aside.

Every pawn on the second rank is defended from the very first move.

The setup belongs to the ThroneScout family; read right to left it becomes position 218.

The engine's main line opens with e4, putting a pawn straight into the centre.
