The tactical motive
Castling 960: the strongest move is to castle — drag the king onto its rook.
Chess960 twist: use the unusual starting setup of the pieces.

Black to move — find the best continuation
How to recognize this tactic
Chess960 castling still ends with king and rook on the classical squares (g1/f1 or c1/d1), but the path can be unusual. Watch which squares the king crosses and whether castling here opens a file, drops a defender or walks into a tactic.
In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.
General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.
Position on the board
White: king d1, queen h1, rook b1 e1, bishop f1 g5, knight e2 b3, pawn a2 b2 c2 f2 h2 g3 e4.
Black: king d8, queen h8, rook b8 e8, bishop c6 f8, knight f6 a8, pawn e5 a7 b7 c7 f7 g7 h7.
15 white and 15 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 7.
The position in numbers
Material is level — 38 points of pieces on each side (pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9).
The white king stands on d1, the black king on d8.
It is Black to move on move 7, with 26 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.
White keeps 7 pawns, Black 7. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): d — natural highways for the rooks and queen.
The Black king has 4 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.
Solution & explanation
Main line
7... O-O-O+ 8. Kc1 Bxe4 9. Qg1 Nb6
Why it works
- Great move! king to c8 keeps the pressure (+2.1).
- Spot on — bishop to e4 (+2.0).
- A natural move: knight to b6.
- You reach a winning position (+2.3).
- If instead Kc1, then Bxe4 and you stay on top.
Move by move
- 7… O-O-O+ — king to b8 with check
Types in this puzzle
Castling to safety
One move — castling — whisks the king out of mortal danger.
Castling to safety: the only escape from the attack is to castle — one move whisks the king to g1 or c1 and brings the rook into play as a bonus. In Chess960 this leap can cross half the board, which is exactly why it slips out of sight. Whenever your king is under pressure, ask first: can I still castle? The typical blunder is throwing that right away with a careless king or rook move.
Winning blow
Find the strike that wins material by force.
A winning blow is a forced material gain that does not fit a single textbook motif. The general tactical recipe applies: spot loose pieces, an awkwardly placed king, overloaded lines. Go through the forcing moves in order of violence — checks, captures, threats — because most combinations start with one of them. Do not judge by feel: calculate the concrete line until the outcome is beyond doubt.
960 castling C-side
Chess960 castling to the C-side — the king lands on c1 wherever it started.
C-side castling in Chess960 sends the king to c1 and the rook to d1, no matter where they began. Sometimes it is one small hop, sometimes a journey through the center — check in advance which squares must be empty and whether any of them are attacked. The rules match classical chess: neither piece has moved, and the king never passes through check. In the game, just drag the king onto the rook.
About this position
These pieces come from starting position #374.
SP-374 · ThroneScout — The king starts on d or e while at least one knight begins in a corner.
The king starts on d1, the rooks on b1 and e1, the queen on h1.
Castling ends where it always does: king to g1 and rook to f1 on the short side, king to c1 and rook to d1 on the long one.
The bishops stand on c1 and f1; their long diagonals reach h6 and a6 once the d- and e-pawns step aside.
The second rank carries 2 pawns with no defender at all: a2, f2.
The setup belongs to the ThroneScout family; read right to left it becomes position 294.
The engine's main line opens with e4, putting a pawn straight into the centre.
