White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king g1, queen g3, bishop c1 h5, knight b3 c3, pawn a2 b2 c2 g2 d4 h4.

Black: king g8, queen d6, bishop b6 c8, knight e5 f8, pawn e4 d5 c6 a7 b7 g7.

12 white and 12 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 17.

The position in numbers

Material is level — 27 points of pieces on each side (pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9).

The white king stands on g1, the black king on g8.

It is White to move on move 17, with 42 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 6 pawns, Black 6. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): f — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: e.

The White king has 4 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

17. Bf4 Nfd7 18. Na4 Bc7 19. dxe5

Why it works

  • Great move! bishop to f4 keeps the pressure (+3.4).
  • knight to a4 develops smoothly.
  • Precise: pawn to e5 is the top choice (+3.4).
  • You win a piece — the knight.
  • If instead Nfd7, then Na4 and you stay on top.

Move by move

  • 17. Bf4 — bishop to f4
  • Nfd7 — knight to d7
  • 18. Na4 — knight to a4
  • Bc7 — bishop to c7
  • 19. dxe5 — pawn to e5 (capture)

Types in this puzzle

Relative pin

A piece shields a more valuable one behind it — moving it loses material.

In a relative pin the piece shields not its king but something valuable behind it, usually the queen. Moving is legal but costly, because the piece behind falls. Look for three units on one line: your long-range piece, a cheaper enemy piece, and an expensive one hiding behind. Beware the classic trap — a relatively pinned piece can still move with check or a bigger threat, so verify before you cash in.

Quiet move

No check, no capture — yet this modest move decides the game.

A quiet move gives no check and takes nothing — yet it decides the game by creating an unstoppable threat or stealing the king's last square. This is the hardest class of moves: the eye hunts for loud blows while a modest shift does the winning. The clue: every forcing try runs into a defense, so seek the move that strengthens the threat or takes squares away. Train yourself to ask: what if I neither capture nor check, but quietly improve?

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #37.

SP-37 · RampartScout — A wing-file king (b or g) and at least one corner knight: the rarest of the six families, just 72 positions.

The king starts on g1, the rooks on f1 and h1, the queen on e1.

The king already stands on its castled square, so castling short moves only the rook, from h1 to f1.

The bishops stand on c1 and d1; their long diagonals reach h6 and h5 once the d- and e-pawns step aside.

One second-rank pawn starts with no defender at all: a2.

The setup belongs to the RampartScout family; read right to left it becomes position 922.

The engine's main line opens with f4.
