White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

Mate in two usually opens with a forcing move — a check, a capture or an unstoppable threat — that strips the king of squares or defenders, so the follow-up mate becomes unavoidable. Look for the first move that leaves the opponent only losing replies.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king a1, rook e1, bishop d2, knight c4 e4, pawn c2 g2 h2 b3.

Black: king f5, bishop g7, knight b5, pawn a5 e6 f6 g6 h6 b7.

9 white and 9 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 32.

The position in numbers

White are ahead by 6 points of material (18 against 12; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on a1, the black king on f5.

It is White to move on move 32, with 39 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 4 pawns, Black 6. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): d — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: a, e, f.

The White king has 3 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

32. Ng3+ Kg4 33. Re4#

Why it works

  • Great move! knight to g3 keeps the pressure (#1).
  • Spot on — rook to e4 (#).
  • The line ends in a forced mate in 2.
  • If instead Kg4, then Re4# and it is mate.

Move by move

  • 32. Ng3+ — knight to g3 with check
  • Kg4 — king to g4
  • 33. Re4# — rook to e4 and it is checkmate

Types in this puzzle

Hook mate

Rook, knight and pawn form a hook the king cannot escape.

The hook mate is a three-piece construction: the rook mates, the knight guards the rook, and a pawn guards the knight. The rook strikes the king at close range along a line, the knight stands diagonally nearby stealing the escape squares, and the pawn anchors the chain. The pattern usually appears near the edge after a rook invasion. Build it link by link — first plant the knight under pawn protection, then crash in with the rook.

Mate in 2

A forced checkmate in two moves.

Mate in two: your move, any reply, then the mating blow. Start with the most forcing first moves — checks and sacrifices that shrink the opponent's options to almost nothing. Against every single reply you must have a mate ready, so check them all without exception. The common failure is analyzing the pretty defense and forgetting the boring one.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #838.

SP-838 · RampartScout — A knight in the corner and the king out on the wing (b/g); like every family, it is closed under mirror twins.

The king starts on b1, the rooks on a1 and e1, the queen on g1.

From b1 the king makes the longest journey Chess960 allows when castling short: five squares to g1.

The bishops stand on c1 and f1; their long diagonals reach h6 and a6 once the d- and e-pawns step aside.

The pawn on c2 is defended by the king alone — the same soft spot f2 is in the classical setup.

The setup belongs to the RampartScout family; read right to left it becomes position 118.

The engine's main line opens with d4, putting a pawn straight into the centre.

Morozov Balance Index: 51 of 100 — class C — noticeable edge. Engine evaluation of the starting position: +26 centipawns for White (depth 45, 400 000 000 nodes).
