How to recognize this tactic
In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.
This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.
General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.
Position sur l'échiquier
Blancs : roi e1, dame e2, tour c1 g1, fou b2, cavalier f2 h3, pion d2 g2 h2 b3 e3 c4 g5.
Noirs : roi e8, dame f8, tour h5 b8, fou d8, cavalier a2, pion h4 c5 f5 a6 b6 d7 e7.
Il y a 14 pièces blanches et 13 noires sur l'échiquier ; la position du problème survient après le coup 17.
The position in numbers
White are ahead by 3 points of material (35 against 32; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.
The white king stands on e1, the black king on e8.
It is White to move on move 17, with 36 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.
White keeps 7 pawns, Black 7. No file is fully open, so the heavy pieces have to be pried in. Half-open for White: a, f.
The White king has 2 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.
Solution et explication
Ligne principale
17. Qxh5+ Qf7 18. g6 Qg7 19. Bxg7
Pourquoi ça marche
- Excellent coup ! dame en h5 maintient la pression (+11.0).
- Développement raisonnable : pion en g6.
- Excellent coup ! fou en g7 maintient la pression (+11.5).
- Vous gagnez une pièce : dame.
- Si à la place Qf7, alors Qh8+ et vous gagnez tour.
Move by move
- 17. Qxh5+ — dame to h5 (capture) with check
