How to recognize this tactic

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position sur l'échiquier

Blancs : roi c1, tour a3, fou d1 f2, cavalier c3 e4, pion b2 c2 d2 h2 a4 h6.

Noirs : roi c8, dame d4, tour b6, fou d8 e8, cavalier f7, pion a5 b7 c7 d7 e7.

The position in numbers

Black are ahead by 5 points of material (23 against 28; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on c1, the black king on c8.

It is White to move on move 19, with 30 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 6 pawns, Black 5. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): f, g — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: e.

The White king has 1 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution et explication

Ligne principale

19. Bxd4 Rxh6 20. Bg1 Rh4 21. Nf2

Pourquoi ça marche

  • Excellent coup ! fou en d4 maintient la pression (+3.9).
  • Développement raisonnable : fou en g1.
  • Développement raisonnable : cavalier en f2.
  • Vous gagnez une pièce : dame.
  • Si à la place Rxh6, alors Bg1 et vous gagnez dame.

Move by move

  • 19. Bxd4 — fou to d4 (capture)
