How to recognize this tactic
This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.
In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.
General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.
Position sur l'échiquier
Blancs : roi g2, dame f6, tour h1 d2, fou f1, cavalier d1, pion a2 b3 e3 f3 g3 h4.
Noirs : roi g8, dame a8, tour h7 c8, fou b6 g6, cavalier d8, pion b5 h5 a6 e6.
The position in numbers
Black are ahead by 1 points of material (31 against 32; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.
The white king stands on g2, the black king on g8.
It is White to move on move 20, with 45 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.
White keeps 6 pawns, Black 4. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): c, d — natural highways for the rooks and queen.
Black hold the bishop pair, an edge in open lines. The White king has 4 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.
Solution et explication
Ligne principale
20. Qxg6+ Kf8 21. Qxh7 Qc6 22. Bd3
Pourquoi ça marche
- Excellent coup ! dame en g6 maintient la pression (+6.7).
- Excellent coup ! dame en h7 maintient la pression (+6.6).
- Développement raisonnable : fou en d3.
- Vous gagnez une pièce : tour.
- Si à la place Kf8, alors Qxh7 et vous gagnez tour.
Move by move
- 20. Qxg6+ — dame to g6 (capture) with check
