How to recognize this tactic

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position sur l'échiquier

Blancs : roi g1, dame f7, tour c1 f1, fou h1 d2, cavalier c2 c3, pion h2 e3 g3 d4.

Noirs : roi h6, dame c7, tour c8 g8, fou h8, cavalier e6 a8, pion c4 c6 e7 h7.

The position in numbers

White are ahead by 3 points of material (35 against 32; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on g1, the black king on h6.

It is White to move on move 18, with 50 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 4 pawns, Black 4. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): a, b, f — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: c.

White hold the bishop pair, an edge in open lines. The White king has 2 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution et explication

Ligne principale

18. Qxe6+ Bf6 19. Rxf6+ Kg7 20. Rf7+

Pourquoi ça marche

  • Excellent coup ! dame en e6 maintient la pression (+10.9).
  • Excellent coup ! tour en f6 maintient la pression (#7).
  • Excellent coup ! tour en f7 maintient la pression (#5).
  • Vous gagnez une pièce : fou.
  • Si à la place Bf6, alors Rxf6+ et vous gagnez fou.

Move by move

  • 18. Qxe6+ — dame to e6 (capture) with check
