The Bishop

And this is the bishop! If the rook loves straight lines, the bishop is all about diagonals: sideways in any direction, as many squares as it likes. And here's what amazed me: a bishop spends the WHOLE game on squares of ONE colour! If it starts on a dark square, the light squares simply don't exist for it. That's why each army has two bishops: one light-squared, one dark-squared, and together they cover the whole board.

Your bishop stands on c1 — that's a dark square, its home colour. From there a long diagonal stretches up and to the right. Run along it all the way to h6! And remember while you're at it: the longer the open diagonal, the happier the bishop.

Your move — make it on the board

What a beautiful diagonal! Like sliding down a hill!

And now a brain-teaser. The bishop only moves diagonally, and along a diagonal all the squares are the same colour — check for yourself if you don't believe me! So can a bishop ever get from a light square to a dark one?

Right! A bishop stays true to its colour forever — now that's loyalty!

This is a preview — the full interactive lesson is in the app.
