White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king g2, queen a1, rook b1 h1, bishop d1, knight c1 f3, pawn a2 f2 d3 b4 e4 h5.

Black: king g8, queen a8, rook f8, bishop c3 e8, knight h6 c8, pawn c4 e6 a7 c7 d7 f7 g7 h7.

13 white and 15 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 11.

The position in numbers

Material is level — 34 points of pieces on each side (pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9).

The white king stands on g2, the black king on g8.

It is White to move on move 11, with 35 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 6 pawns, Black 8. No file is fully open, so the heavy pieces have to be pried in. Half-open for White: c, g.

Black hold the bishop pair, an edge in open lines. The White king has 5 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

11. Qxc3 f5 12. e5 Ne7 13. dxc4

Why it works

  • Great move! queen to c3 keeps the pressure (+3.3).
  • pawn to e5 develops smoothly.
  • Precise: pawn to c4 is the top choice (+3.7).
  • You win a piece — the bishop.
  • If instead f5, then e5 and you win the bishop.

Move by move

  • 11. Qxc3 — queen to c3 (capture)

Types in this puzzle

Hanging piece

A piece is left without protection — just take it.

A hanging piece is simply an unprotected piece you can take for free. It sounds primitive, yet most amateur games are decided exactly this way. Build the habit: before every move, sweep the board and note every undefended piece, yours and theirs. The classic mistake is hunting for a brilliant combination when all you need to do is bend down and pick up the gift.

Development punish

Half the army still asleep — the attack breaks through.

Punishing lazy development: half of your opponent's army is asleep on its starting squares, which means you outnumber him where the fight is. Count not the pieces on the board but the pieces in play — if five or more of his pieces have never moved, look for a forcing attack. The sign is a development lead plus open lines toward his king. Strike immediately: give him two quiet moves and the advantage evaporates.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #489.

SP-489 · BastionGuard — King shifted to c or f, knights kept clear of the edges — 168 positions in all.

The king starts on f1, the rooks on b1 and h1, the queen on a1.

Castling ends where it always does: king to g1 and rook to f1 on the short side, king to c1 and rook to d1 on the long one.

The bishops stand on d1 and e1; their long diagonals reach h5 and a5 once the e- and d-pawns step aside.

The pawn on g2 is defended by the king alone — the same soft spot f2 is in the classical setup.

The setup belongs to the BastionGuard family; read right to left it becomes position 569.

The engine's main line opens with b4.
