White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king f1, queen c3, rook d1 h1, bishop b1, knight e1 g1, pawn a2 d2 g2 h2 b3 f3 c4 d5.

Black: king g7, queen c8, rook d8 h8, bishop e5 a8, knight e8, pawn c5 b6 a7 d7 e7 f7 h7.

15 white and 14 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 8.

The position in numbers

White are ahead by 1 points of material (36 against 35; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on f1, the black king on g7.

It is White to move on move 8, with 34 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 8 pawns, Black 7. No file is fully open, so the heavy pieces have to be pried in. Half-open for White: e.

Black hold the bishop pair, an edge in open lines. The White king has 2 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

8. Qxe5+ Kg8 9. Ne2 h5 10. h4

Why it works

  • Great move! queen to e5 keeps the pressure (+5.8).
  • Spot on — knight to e2 (+5.7).
  • A natural move: pawn to h4.
  • You win a piece — the bishop.
  • If instead Kg8, then h4 and you win the bishop.

Move by move

  • 8. Qxe5+ — queen to e5 (capture) with check

Types in this puzzle

Hanging piece

A piece is left without protection — just take it.

A hanging piece is simply an unprotected piece you can take for free. It sounds primitive, yet most amateur games are decided exactly this way. Build the habit: before every move, sweep the board and note every undefended piece, yours and theirs. The classic mistake is hunting for a brilliant combination when all you need to do is bend down and pick up the gift.

Early queen raid

From an odd starting square the queen raids before defences exist.

The early queen raid: from an odd starting square the queen bursts into the game before any defense exists. In classical chess an early queen sortie gets punished, but in Chess960 it sometimes hits squares that literally no one can defend. The sign: within a move or two the queen reaches an unprotected pawn or piece near the enemy king. First check whether the queen can be chased with tempo — otherwise the raid just loses time.

Development punish

Half the army still asleep — the attack breaks through.

Punishing lazy development: half of your opponent's army is asleep on its starting squares, which means you outnumber him where the fight is. Count not the pieces on the board but the pieces in play — if five or more of his pieces have never moved, look for a forcing attack. The sign is a development lead plus open lines toward his king. Strike immediately: give him two quiet moves and the advantage evaporates.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #480.

SP-480 · BastionGuard — King off-centre on c or f with both knights on inner files.

The king starts on f1, the rooks on d1 and h1, the queen on c1.

The queenside rook already stands on d1, so castling long moves only the king, from f1 to c1.

A bishop starts in the corner on a1: it has a single diagonal, which the b-pawn unlocks, running out to h8.

The pawn on f2 is defended by the king alone — the classic soft spot of the standard setup.

The setup belongs to the BastionGuard family; read right to left it becomes position 575.

The engine's main line opens with c4.
