White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king e1, rook d1 f1, bishop c1, pawn a2 b2 e2 h2 c3 e5 f5.

Black: king f8, queen d7, rook d8, knight a8, pawn d5 b6 c6 e6 a7 h7.

11 white and 10 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 17.

The position in numbers

Black are ahead by 3 points of material (20 against 23; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on e1, the black king on f8.

It is White to move on move 17, with 28 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 7 pawns, Black 6. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): g — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: d.

The White king has 3 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

17. fxe6+ Ke8 18. exd7+

Why it works

  • Great move! pawn to e6 keeps the pressure (+7.1).
  • Well found: pawn to d7 (+7.4).
  • You win a piece — the queen.
  • If instead Ke8, then exd7+ and you win the queen.

Move by move

  • 17. fxe6+ — pawn to e6 (capture) with check
  • Ke8 — king to e8
  • 18. exd7+ — pawn to d7 (capture) with check

Types in this puzzle

Discovered check

The moving piece opens a check — and is free to grab anything meanwhile.

With a discovered check the moving piece unmasks a check from the piece standing behind it. While the king deals with the check, the piece that moved grabs whatever it likes, free of charge. Look for your long-range piece on a line with the enemy king, with exactly one of your own pieces in between. The rule: among all the ways to step aside, pick the one that captures or attacks the most expensive loot.

Check chase

Every move is a check — the king is chased into losing ground.

In a check chase every one of your moves is a check, so the opponent never gets a free second. The king is herded across the board until it loses a piece or walks into a decisive blow. Such lines are the easiest to calculate: each check allows only a handful of replies, so try them all. Make it a habit to start calculating any sharp position with the checks — they are the most forcing moves on the board.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #356.

SP-356 · ThroneScout — The king starts on d or e while at least one knight begins in a corner.

The king starts on e1, the rooks on d1 and f1, the queen on g1.

The kingside rook already stands on f1, so castling short moves only the king, from e1 to g1.

The bishops stand on b1 and c1; their long diagonals reach h7 and h6 once the c- and d-pawns step aside.

The pawn on e2 is defended by the king alone — the same soft spot f2 is in the classical setup.

The setup belongs to the ThroneScout family; read right to left it becomes position 318.

The engine's main line opens with f4.
