White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king c1, rook d3, bishop g2 g5, pawn b2 h2 g3 a4.

Black: king a8, rook a6, bishop d7 g7, pawn b4 b5 e5 g6 b7 h7.

8 white and 10 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 25.

The position in numbers

Black are ahead by 2 points of material (15 against 17; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on c1, the black king on a8.

It is White to move on move 25, with 37 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 4 pawns, Black 6. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): c, d, f — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: e.

The White king has 4 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

25. Rxd7 Bf6 26. Bxb7+

Why it works

  • Great move! rook to d7 keeps the pressure (+6.2).
  • Spot on — bishop to b7 (+6.1).
  • You win a piece — the bishop.
  • If instead Bf6, then Bxb7+ and you win the bishop.

Move by move

  • 25. Rxd7 — rook to d7 (capture)
  • Bf6 — bishop to f6
  • 26. Bxb7+ — bishop to b7 (capture) with check

Types in this puzzle

Royal fork

A fork with check: the king must move, and the second piece is lost.

A royal fork is a fork with check — one of the two targets is the king itself. The check must be answered first, so nobody is left to rescue the second piece. Look for squares where your piece gives check and simultaneously attacks an undefended queen or rook. It is the most reliable fork of all, because your opponent literally has no choice.

Endgame tactic

Tactics live in the endgame too — strike while material is scarce.

Tactics do not retire when the queens come off: forks, pins and double attacks live on in the endgame. With so little material left, every tactical loss is almost always decisive. The signs are the usual ones — undefended pieces, king and piece on one line, a pawn about to promote. Even in a "technical" ending, scan for a shot before every move, both yours and your opponent's.

Win the pinned piece

The pinned piece cannot run — attack it again and win it.

A pinned piece cannot flee, which means you can win it outright by attacking it one more time. Count attackers against defenders: if you outnumber them, the piece is yours. The best extra attacker is a pawn, since it costs less than anything it might capture. Do not rush the capture — build up the pressure first, then harvest.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #919.

SP-919 · RampartGuard — The king starts out on a wing file, b or g, with neither knight in a corner.

The king starts on b1, the rooks on a1 and d1, the queen on e1.

From b1 the king makes the longest journey Chess960 allows when castling short: five squares to g1.

A bishop starts in the corner on h1: it has a single diagonal, which the g-pawn unlocks, running out to a8.

The pawn on c2 is defended by the king alone — the same soft spot f2 is in the classical setup.

The setup belongs to the RampartGuard family; read right to left it becomes position 34.

The engine's main line opens with a4.
