White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king c2, queen c7, bishop d3, knight f3, pawn a2 b2 e2 g3 d4.

Black: king g8, queen a1, rook c8, bishop d7, pawn a7 e7 g7.

9 white and 7 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 23.

The position in numbers

Material is level — 20 points of pieces on each side (pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9).

The white king stands on c2, the black king on g8.

It is White to move on move 23, with 30 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 5 pawns, Black 3. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): c, f, h — natural highways for the rooks and queen.

The White king has 3 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

23. Bc4+ Kh7 24. Qxd7 Rxc4+ 25. Kb3 Qd1+ 26. Kxc4

Why it works

  • Great move! bishop to c4 keeps the pressure (+1.8).
  • Spot on — queen to d7 (+1.9).
  • A natural move: king to b3.
  • Great move! king to c4 keeps the pressure (+2.2).
  • You win a piece — the rook.
  • If instead Kh7, then Qxd7 and you win the bishop.

Move by move

  • 23. Bc4+ — bishop to c4 with check
  • Kh7 — king to h7
  • 24. Qxd7 — queen to d7 (capture)
  • Rxc4+ — rook to c4 (capture) with check
  • 25. Kb3 — king to b3
  • Qd1+ — queen to d1 with check
  • 26. Kxc4 — king to c4 (capture)

Types in this puzzle

Decoy

A sacrifice lures the king or a piece onto a fatal square.

A decoy is the mirror image of deflection: you sacrifice to drag the king or a piece onto a fatal square. The classic is a queen or rook sac whose capture pulls the king into a knight fork, a discovered check or mate. Find the square where the target will be hit, then find the offer it cannot refuse. Calculate to the very end — a decoy only works when the follow-up is forced.

Counter-strike

Don't defend — answer the threat with a bigger one.

The counter-strike: instead of defending against the threat, you answer with a bigger threat of your own. While your opponent grabs a pawn, you deliver mate — the arithmetic favors you. Look for a counter when direct defenses fail: do you have a check, an attack on the queen, a mating threat? The beginner's error is meeting every threat with a reflexive defense without checking the counterattacking resources first.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #756.

SP-756 · ThroneGuard — King on a central file (d/e) with both knights on inner files — the classic-type setup.

The king starts on d1, the rooks on a1 and g1, the queen on h1.

Castling ends where it always does: king to g1 and rook to f1 on the short side, king to c1 and rook to d1 on the long one.

The bishops stand on b1 and c1; their long diagonals reach h7 and h6 once the c- and d-pawns step aside.

One second-rank pawn starts with no defender at all: f2.

The setup belongs to the ThroneGuard family; read right to left it becomes position 398.

The engine's main line opens with d4, putting a pawn straight into the centre.

Morozov Balance Index: 34 of 100 — class C — noticeable edge. Engine evaluation of the starting position: +31 centipawns for White (depth 44, 400 000 000 nodes).
