White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king b1, queen b3, rook d1, bishop h1, knight c4, pawn e2 f2 c3 g3 h3 d6.

Black: king b8, queen a6, rook a4, bishop h8, knight d8, pawn b4 f5 g6 c7 e7 h7.

11 white and 11 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 21.

The position in numbers

Material is level — 26 points of pieces on each side (pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9).

The white king stands on b1, the black king on b8.

It is White to move on move 21, with 42 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 6 pawns, Black 6. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): a — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: b.

The White king has 4 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

21. dxe7 Ra1+ 22. Kc2 Rxd1 23. Kxd1 Kc8 24. Qxb4

Why it works

  • Great move! pawn to e7 keeps the pressure (+6.4).
  • Spot on — king to c2 (+6.4).
  • Precise: king to d1 is the top choice (+7.0).
  • Best move. queen to b4 is exactly what the engine plays (+6.4).
  • You win decisive material (+6.4).
  • If instead Ra1+, then Kc2 and you stay on top.

Move by move

  • 21. dxe7 — pawn to e7 (capture)
  • Ra1+ — rook to a1 with check
  • 22. Kc2 — king to c2
  • Rxd1 — rook to d1 (capture)
  • 23. Kxd1 — king to d1 (capture)
  • Kc8 — king to c8
  • 24. Qxb4 — queen to b4 (capture)

Types in this puzzle

Absolute pin

A piece is pinned against its king — it cannot legally move.

An absolute pin freezes a piece on the line between its own king and your long-range attacker: moving it is simply illegal. The pattern is three units on one straight line — your bishop, rook or queen, an enemy piece, and the enemy king behind it. A pinned piece neither attacks nor defends anything: treat it as if it were off the board. Pile up on it, ideally with a pawn, because running away is against the rules.

Discovered attack

A piece steps aside and opens a second attack from the piece behind it.

A discovered attack works like a curtain: one piece steps off the line and unveils the long-range piece behind it. The beauty is that the moving piece can create a second threat of its own — two attacks in one move. Look for your stacked pairs: a bishop or rook behind a knight or pawn, aimed through them at something valuable. Send the front piece to the most aggressive square — a discovery without a second threat wastes half its power.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #907.

SP-907 · RampartGuard — The king starts out on a wing file, b or g, with neither knight in a corner.

The king starts on b1, the rooks on a1 and d1, the queen on c1.

From b1 the king makes the longest journey Chess960 allows when castling short: five squares to g1.

A bishop starts in the corner on h1: it has a single diagonal, which the g-pawn unlocks, running out to a8.

Every pawn on the second rank is defended from the very first move.

The setup belongs to the RampartGuard family; read right to left it becomes position 49.

The engine's main line opens with a4.

Morozov Balance Index: 31 of 100 — class C — noticeable edge. Engine evaluation of the starting position: +32 centipawns for White (depth 44, 400 000 000 nodes).
