White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

Mate in two usually opens with a forcing move — a check, a capture or an unstoppable threat — that strips the king of squares or defenders, so the follow-up mate becomes unavoidable. Look for the first move that leaves the opponent only losing replies.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king g1, queen b7, rook a1 e1, knight f3, pawn a2 d2 h2 b3 e3 h3 c4.

Black: king d8, rook g8, bishop h6, pawn c5 a6 b6 e6 g6 e7 h7.

12 white and 10 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 21.

The position in numbers

White are ahead by 14 points of material (29 against 15; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on g1, the black king on d8.

It is White to move on move 21, with 35 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 7 pawns, Black 7. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): f — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: g.

The White king has 4 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

21. Qb8+ Kd7 22. Ne5#

Why it works

  • Best move. queen to b8 is exactly what the engine plays (#1).
  • Spot on — knight to e5 (#).
  • The line ends in a forced mate in 2.
  • If instead Kd7, then Ne5# and it is mate.

Move by move

  • 21. Qb8+ — queen to b8 with check
  • Kd7 — king to d7
  • 22. Ne5# — knight to e5 and it is checkmate

Types in this puzzle

Knight mate

The knight lands the killing blow from its unique angle.

In a knight mate the final blow comes from the knight — the only piece whose check can never be blocked. That makes it lethal against a cramped king: only a king move or capturing the knight itself can help. The sign: the squares around the king are occupied or covered, and there is a hop from which the knight checks while staying untouchable. Bring the knight over early — it is slower than the long-range pieces, but its strike cannot be parried.

Mate in 2

A forced checkmate in two moves.

Mate in two: your move, any reply, then the mating blow. Start with the most forcing first moves — checks and sacrifices that shrink the opponent's options to almost nothing. Against every single reply you must have a mate ready, so check them all without exception. The common failure is analyzing the pretty defense and forgetting the boring one.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #502.

SP-502 · ThroneGuard — A centre-file king with no knight on the edge; a position and its mirror twin always share this family.

The king starts on e1, the rooks on a1 and h1, the queen on b1.

Castling ends where it always does: king to g1 and rook to f1 on the short side, king to c1 and rook to d1 on the long one.

The bishops stand on c1 and f1; their long diagonals reach h6 and a6 once the d- and e-pawns step aside.

Every pawn on the second rank is defended from the very first move.

The setup belongs to the ThroneGuard family; read right to left it becomes position 550.

The engine's main line opens with e4, putting a pawn straight into the centre.
