Black to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

A discovered attack fires when one piece steps aside and unmasks the piece behind it. Look for your own units that block a rook, bishop or queen: moving the front piece — ideally with a threat of its own — springs two attacks in one move.

A fork is one piece attacking two targets at once. Look for a knight, pawn or queen move that lands where it hits the king (or a bigger piece) and a second undefended unit on the same turn — the opponent can save only one.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king g1, queen e2, rook a1 f1, bishop e3, pawn a2 b2 g2 c3 d4 g5 h5.

Black: king g8, queen c7, rook f8, bishop d6, knight f5, pawn d5 e6 a7 b7 f7 g7 h7.

12 white and 12 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 19.

The position in numbers

White are ahead by 2 points of material (29 against 27; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on g1, the black king on g8.

It is Black to move on move 19, with 39 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 7 pawns, Black 7. No file is fully open, so the heavy pieces have to be pried in. Half-open for Black: c.

The Black king has 1 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

19... Bh2+ 20. Kh1 Ng3+ 21. Kxh2 Nxe2+

Why it works

  • Great move! bishop to h2 keeps the pressure (+5.4).
  • Well found: knight to g3 (+6.0).
  • Strong! knight to e2 is the sharp choice (+5.9).
  • You win a piece — the queen.
  • If instead Kh1, then Ng3+ and you stay on top.

Move by move

  • 19… Bh2+ — bishop to h2 with check
  • 20. Kh1 — king to h1
  • Ng3+ — knight to g3 with check
  • 21. Kxh2 — king to h2 (capture)
  • Nxe2+ — knight to e2 (capture) with check

Types in this puzzle

Royal fork

A fork with check: the king must move, and the second piece is lost.

A royal fork is a fork with check — one of the two targets is the king itself. The check must be answered first, so nobody is left to rescue the second piece. Look for squares where your piece gives check and simultaneously attacks an undefended queen or rook. It is the most reliable fork of all, because your opponent literally has no choice.

Discovered check

The moving piece opens a check — and is free to grab anything meanwhile.

With a discovered check the moving piece unmasks a check from the piece standing behind it. While the king deals with the check, the piece that moved grabs whatever it likes, free of charge. Look for your long-range piece on a line with the enemy king, with exactly one of your own pieces in between. The rule: among all the ways to step aside, pick the one that captures or attacks the most expensive loot.

Check chase

Every move is a check — the king is chased into losing ground.

In a check chase every one of your moves is a check, so the opponent never gets a free second. The king is herded across the board until it loses a piece or walks into a decisive blow. Such lines are the easiest to calculate: each check allows only a handful of replies, so try them all. Make it a habit to start calculating any sharp position with the checks — they are the most forcing moves on the board.
