How to recognize this tactic
Mate in two usually opens with a forcing move — a check, a capture or an unstoppable threat — that strips the king of squares or defenders, so the follow-up mate becomes unavoidable. Look for the first move that leaves the opponent only losing replies.
General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.
Posición en el tablero
Blancas: rey g1, dama e2, torre a1 d1, alfil b2 b5, caballo d2, peón f2 h2 b3 g3 a4 d4.
Negras: rey g8, dama b7, torre a8 f8, alfil d6, caballo b4 g5, peón c5 e5 f6 g7 h7.
Hay 13 piezas blancas y 12 negras en el tablero; la posición del problema surge tras la jugada 21.
The position in numbers
White are ahead by 1 points of material (34 against 33; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.
The white king stands on g1, the black king on g8.
It is Black to move on move 21, with 53 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.
White keeps 6 pawns, Black 5. No file is fully open, so the heavy pieces have to be pried in. Half-open for Black: a, b, d.
White hold the bishop pair, an edge in open lines. The Black king has 2 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.
Solución y explicación
Línea principal
21... Nh3+ 22. Kf1 Qh1#
Por qué funciona
- ¡Gran jugada! caballo a h3 mantiene la presión (#1).
- ¡Gran jugada! dama a h1 mantiene la presión (#).
- La línea termina en mate forzado en 2.
- Si en cambio Kf1, entonces Qh1# y es mate.
Move by move
- 21… Nh3+ — caballo to h3 with check
- 22. Kf1 — rey to f1
- Qh1# — dama to h1 and it is checkmate
