How to recognize this tactic
In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.
Mate in two usually opens with a forcing move — a check, a capture or an unstoppable threat — that strips the king of squares or defenders, so the follow-up mate becomes unavoidable. Look for the first move that leaves the opponent only losing replies.
General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.
Position sur l'échiquier
Blancs : roi e2, dame h1, tour c1 g3, fou d4 d5, cavalier g5, pion c2 a3 d3 f4 h4.
Noirs : roi h6, tour b8, pion e3 a5 b5 f5 c6 g7.
The position in numbers
White are ahead by 22 points of material (33 against 11; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.
The white king stands on e2, the black king on h6.
It is White to move on move 28, with 56 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.
White keeps 5 pawns, Black 6. No file is fully open, so the heavy pieces have to be pried in. Half-open for White: b, e, g.
White hold the bishop pair, an edge in open lines. The White king has 5 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.
Solution et explication
Ligne principale
28. Nf7+ Kh5 29. Rg5#
Move by move
- 28. Nf7+ — cavalier to f7 with check
- Kh5 — roi to h5
- 29. Rg5# — tour to g5 and it is checkmate
