How to recognize this tactic
A fork is one piece attacking two targets at once. Look for a knight, pawn or queen move that lands where it hits the king (or a bigger piece) and a second undefended unit on the same turn — the opponent can save only one.
General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.
Position sur l'échiquier
Blancs : roi g1, dame h6, tour e2, fou d4, pion g2 c3 h4.
Noirs : roi g8, dame f5, tour f7, fou e6, pion g6 h7.
Il y a 7 pièces blanches et 6 noires sur l'échiquier ; la position du problème survient après le coup 36.
The position in numbers
White are ahead by 1 points of material (20 against 19; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.
The white king stands on g1, the black king on g8.
It is Black to move on move 36, with 33 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.
White keeps 3 pawns, Black 2. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): a, b, d, e, f — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for Black: c.
The Black king has 0 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.
Solution et explication
Ligne principale
36... Qf1+ 37. Kh2 Qxe2
Pourquoi ça marche
- Excellent coup ! dame en f1 maintient la pression (+4.1).
- Excellent coup ! dame en e2 maintient la pression (+4.2).
- Vous gagnez une pièce : tour.
- Si à la place Kh2, alors Qxe2 et vous gagnez tour.
Move by move
- 36… Qf1+ — dame to f1 with check
- 37. Kh2 — roi to h2
- Qxe2 — dame to e2 (capture)
Types de ce problème
Fourchette royale
