How to recognize this tactic
In a mate in three every move must be forcing; the defender should never get a free tempo. Find the check or threat that herds the king, calculate the single defence to each, and confirm the net closes on the third move.
General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.
Position sur l'échiquier
Blancs : roi g3, dame e3, cavalier e6, pion g2 h2 c3.
Noirs : roi h8, dame c2, tour d7, pion b5 h5 g6 c7.
The position in numbers
Black are ahead by 3 points of material (15 against 18; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.
The white king stands on g3, the black king on h8.
It is White to move on move 42, with 32 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.
White keeps 3 pawns, Black 4. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): a, d, e, f — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: b.
The White king has 4 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.
Solution et explication
Ligne principale
42. Qh6+ Kg8 43. Qf8+ Kh7 44. Ng5#
Move by move
- 42. Qh6+ — dame to h6 with check
- Kg8 — roi to g8
- 43. Qf8+ — dame to f8 with check
- Kh7 — roi to h7
- 44. Ng5# — cavalier to g5 and it is checkmate
