How to recognize this tactic

Deflection drags a defender away from its duty. Identify the enemy piece that guards a key square or mate, then force it to move — with a check, a capture or a threat it must answer — and strike where it no longer defends.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position sur l'échiquier

Blancs : roi g1, dame c6, tour c1, pion a2 f2 g2 b3 h3.

Noirs : roi g7, dame d6, tour d4, pion a5 f6 g6 h7.

Il y a 8 pièces blanches et 7 noires sur l'échiquier ; la position du problème survient après le coup 32.

The position in numbers

White are ahead by 1 points of material (19 against 18; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on g1, the black king on g7.

It is Black to move on move 32, with 37 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 5 pawns, Black 4. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): c, d, e — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for Black: b.

The Black king has 5 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution et explication

Ligne principale

32... Rd1+ 33. Rxd1 Qxc6

Pourquoi ça marche

  • Excellent coup ! tour en d1 maintient la pression (+4.4).
  • Excellent coup ! dame en c6 maintient la pression (+4.3).
  • Vous gagnez une pièce : dame.
  • Si à la place Rxd1, alors Qxc6 et vous gagnez dame.

Move by move

  • 32… Rd1+ — tour to d1 with check
  • 33. Rxd1 — tour to d1 (capture)
  • Qxc6 — dame to c6 (capture)
