How to recognize this tactic
A fork is one piece attacking two targets at once. Look for a knight, pawn or queen move that lands where it hits the king (or a bigger piece) and a second undefended unit on the same turn — the opponent can save only one.
General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.
Position sur l'échiquier
Blancs : roi b3, dame e4, tour a1 e1, fou g4, cavalier e6, pion a3 b4 d5 h5 g6.
Noirs : roi g8, dame b7, tour f6 a8, cavalier c4, pion f4 a5 b5 d6 h6 g7.
The position in numbers
White are ahead by 2 points of material (30 against 28; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.
The white king stands on b3, the black king on g8.
It is Black to move on move 33, with 33 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.
White keeps 5 pawns, Black 6. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): c, e — natural highways for the rooks and queen.
The Black king has 1 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.
Solution et explication
Ligne principale
33... Nd2+ 34. Kb2 Nxe4
Pourquoi ça marche
- Excellent coup ! cavalier en d2 maintient la pression (+4.9).
- Excellent coup ! cavalier en e4 maintient la pression (+5.2).
- Vous gagnez une pièce : dame.
- Si à la place Kb2, alors Nxe4 et vous gagnez dame.
Move by move
- 33… Nd2+ — cavalier to d2 with check
- 34. Kb2 — roi to b2
- Nxe4 — cavalier to e4 (capture)
Types de ce problème
Fourchette royale
