White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king e2, rook h1, bishop f2, pawn d2 g2 a3 f3 e4 d5 g5 d6.

Black: king g8, rook b8 f8, bishop c1, pawn a4 f4 f5 a7 h7.

11 white and 9 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 27.

The position in numbers

Black are ahead by 2 points of material (16 against 18; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on e2, the black king on g8.

It is White to move on move 27, with 32 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 8 pawns, Black 5. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): b, c — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: h.

The White king has 4 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

27. Rxc1 fxe4 28. fxe4 Kg7 29. Bxa7

Why it works

  • Great move! rook to c1 keeps the pressure (+5.1).
  • Well found: pawn to e4 (+5.1).
  • Precise: bishop to a7 is the top choice (+5.2).
  • You win a piece — the bishop.
  • If instead fxe4, then fxe4 and you win the bishop.

Move by move

  • 27. Rxc1 — rook to c1 (capture)
  • fxe4 — pawn to e4 (capture)
  • 28. fxe4 — pawn to e4 (capture)
  • Kg7 — king to g7
  • 29. Bxa7 — bishop to a7 (capture)

Types in this puzzle

Winning blow

Find the strike that wins material by force.

A winning blow is a forced material gain that does not fit a single textbook motif. The general tactical recipe applies: spot loose pieces, an awkwardly placed king, overloaded lines. Go through the forcing moves in order of violence — checks, captures, threats — because most combinations start with one of them. Do not judge by feel: calculate the concrete line until the outcome is beyond doubt.

Endgame tactic

Tactics live in the endgame too — strike while material is scarce.

Tactics do not retire when the queens come off: forks, pins and double attacks live on in the endgame. With so little material left, every tactical loss is almost always decisive. The signs are the usual ones — undefended pieces, king and piece on one line, a pawn about to promote. Even in a "technical" ending, scan for a shot before every move, both yours and your opponent's.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #30.

SP-30 · ThroneScout — King on a central file (d/e) with a knight starting on the rim (a/h).

The king starts on e1, the rooks on d1 and h1, the queen on b1.

The queenside rook already stands on d1, so castling long moves only the king, from e1 to c1.

The bishops stand on f1 and g1; their long diagonals reach a6 and a7 once the e- and f-pawns step aside.

Every pawn on the second rank is defended from the very first move.

The setup belongs to the ThroneScout family; read right to left it becomes position 932.

The engine's main line opens with d4, putting a pawn straight into the centre.
