White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king b2, queen b3, rook b1 d6, bishop c3, pawn c2 g2 h2 a5 e5.

Black: king c8, queen c5, rook b8 f8, bishop h4, knight h5, pawn b5 g7 h7.

10 white and 9 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 27.

The position in numbers

Black are ahead by 1 points of material (27 against 28; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on b2, the black king on c8.

It is White to move on move 27, with 43 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 5 pawns, Black 3. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): d, f — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: b.

The White king has 3 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

27. Qe6+ Kb7 28. Qd7+ Qc7 29. Rb6+ Ka8 30. Qxc7

Why it works

  • Great move! queen to e6 keeps the pressure (#4).
  • Spot on — queen to d7 (#4).
  • Strong! rook to b6 is the sharp choice (#3).
  • Best move. queen to c7 is exactly what the engine plays (#2).
  • You win a piece — the queen.
  • If instead Kb7, then Qd7+ and you stay on top.

Move by move

  • 27. Qe6+ — queen to e6 with check
  • Kb7 — king to b7
  • 28. Qd7+ — queen to d7 with check
  • Qc7 — queen to c7
  • 29. Rb6+ — rook to b6 with check
  • Ka8 — king to a8
  • 30. Qxc7 — queen to c7 (capture)

Types in this puzzle

Absolute pin

A piece is pinned against its king — it cannot legally move.

An absolute pin freezes a piece on the line between its own king and your long-range attacker: moving it is simply illegal. The pattern is three units on one straight line — your bishop, rook or queen, an enemy piece, and the enemy king behind it. A pinned piece neither attacks nor defends anything: treat it as if it were off the board. Pile up on it, ideally with a pawn, because running away is against the rules.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #873.

SP-873 · BastionScout — Off-centre king plus a rim knight (a/h): 168 positions carry this shape.

The king starts on c1, the rooks on b1 and f1, the queen on a1.

The king already stands on c1, so castling long moves only the rook, from b1 to d1.

The bishops stand on d1 and e1; their long diagonals reach h5 and a5 once the e- and d-pawns step aside.

The second rank carries 2 pawns with no defender at all: g2, h2.

The setup belongs to the BastionScout family; read right to left it becomes position 89.

The engine's main line opens with e4, putting a pawn straight into the centre.

Morozov Balance Index: 37 of 100 — class C — noticeable edge. Engine evaluation of the starting position: +30 centipawns for White (depth 43, 400 000 000 nodes).
