White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king a1, rook b2 c5, bishop d5, knight f3 e4, pawn a2 h2 c3 g3 f5.

Black: king a8, queen a7, rook a6 d8, knight e2 c6, pawn f6 g7 h7.

11 white and 9 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 32.

The position in numbers

Black are ahead by 4 points of material (24 against 28; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on a1, the black king on a8.

It is White to move on move 32, with 39 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 5 pawns, Black 3. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): b, d, e — natural highways for the rooks and queen.

The White king has 1 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

32. Rxc6 Rxa2+ 33. Rxa2 Rxd5 34. Rxa7+

Why it works

  • Great move! rook to c6 keeps the pressure (+5.0).
  • Well found: rook to a2 (+5.3).
  • Precise: rook to a7 is the top choice (+5.3).
  • You win a piece — the queen.
  • If instead Rxa2+, then Rxa2 and you win the rook.

Move by move

  • 32. Rxc6 — rook to c6 (capture)
  • Rxa2+ — rook to a2 (capture) with check
  • 33. Rxa2 — rook to a2 (capture)
  • Rxd5 — rook to d5 (capture)
  • 34. Rxa7+ — rook to a7 (capture) with check

Types in this puzzle

Rook fork

The rook attacks two targets along rank and file at the same time.

A rook fork attacks two targets from one square — one along the file, the other along the rank. Look for enemy pieces standing at a right angle to each other, both visible from a single safe square. This is bread and butter in endgames, where a rook check picks up loose pieces and pawns along the way. Test every rook check you have: does it also hit something valuable on the other line?

Only move

Everything else loses — find the only move that holds.

An only move is a position where everything loses except one single continuation. You cannot play "by hand" here: run through fundamentally different defenses — run away, block, trade, counterattack — and discard the ones that fail. The hallmark of these puzzles is that the obvious moves lose quickly while the solution often looks strange. First understand exactly what the threat is — then the one saving move reveals itself.

Win the pinned piece

The pinned piece cannot run — attack it again and win it.

A pinned piece cannot flee, which means you can win it outright by attacking it one more time. Count attackers against defenders: if you outnumber them, the piece is yours. The best extra attacker is a pawn, since it costs less than anything it might capture. Do not rush the capture — build up the pressure first, then harvest.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #925.

SP-925 · RampartScout — A wing-file king (b or g) and at least one corner knight: the rarest of the six families, just 72 positions.

The king starts on b1, the rooks on a1 and c1, the queen on e1.

From b1 the king makes the longest journey Chess960 allows when castling short: five squares to g1.

The bishops stand on d1 and g1; their long diagonals reach h5 and a7 once the e- and f-pawns step aside.

One second-rank pawn starts with no defender at all: g2.

The setup belongs to the RampartScout family; read right to left it becomes position 40.

The engine's main line opens with a4.

Morozov Balance Index: 43 of 100 — class C — noticeable edge. Engine evaluation of the starting position: +28 centipawns for White (depth 49, 400 000 000 nodes).
