White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

Mate in two usually opens with a forcing move — a check, a capture or an unstoppable threat — that strips the king of squares or defenders, so the follow-up mate becomes unavoidable. Look for the first move that leaves the opponent only losing replies.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king c1, queen b8, rook f1, bishop a6 g7, knight f6, pawn c2 d2 h2 e3 a4 f4.

Black: king e7, queen d7, bishop a2, knight g2, pawn a5 e5 c6 d6 h7.

12 white and 9 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 27.

The position in numbers

White are ahead by 9 points of material (29 against 20; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on c1, the black king on e7.

It is White to move on move 27, with 51 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 6 pawns, Black 5. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): b, g — natural highways for the rooks and queen.

White hold the bishop pair, an edge in open lines. The White king has 2 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

27. Qf8+ Ke6 28. f5#

Why it works

  • Best move. queen to f8 is exactly what the engine plays (#1).
  • Spot on — pawn to f5 (#).
  • The line ends in a forced mate in 2.
  • If instead Ke6, then f5# and it is mate.

Move by move

  • 27. Qf8+ — queen to f8 with check
  • Ke6 — king to e6
  • 28. f5# — pawn to f5 and it is checkmate

Types in this puzzle

Pawn mate

The humblest soldier delivers the final blow.

The pawn mate lets the humblest soldier land the final blow. It happens to a king stuck among its own and enemy pieces: the pawn strikes diagonally from one square away and there is nowhere left to run. The sign: the squares around the king are covered or occupied, and your pawn stands one step from striking distance. Never write pawns out of your attack — their blows are the cheapest and therefore the most humiliating.

Mate in 2

A forced checkmate in two moves.

Mate in two: your move, any reply, then the mating blow. Start with the most forcing first moves — checks and sacrifices that shrink the opponent's options to almost nothing. Against every single reply you must have a mate ready, so check them all without exception. The common failure is analyzing the pretty defense and forgetting the boring one.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #781.

SP-781 · BastionScout — A c- or f-file king with at least one knight out on the edge.

The king starts on c1, the rooks on b1 and f1, the queen on a1.

The king already stands on c1, so castling long moves only the rook, from b1 to d1.

The bishops stand on d1 and g1; their long diagonals reach h5 and a7 once the e- and f-pawns step aside.

The pawn on d2 is defended by the king alone — the same soft spot f2 is in the classical setup.

The setup belongs to the BastionScout family; read right to left it becomes position 184.

The engine's main line opens with e4, putting a pawn straight into the centre.

Morozov Balance Index: 40 of 100 — class C — noticeable edge. Engine evaluation of the starting position: +29 centipawns for White (depth 46, 400 000 000 nodes).
