How to recognize this tactic

Deflection drags a defender away from its duty. Identify the enemy piece that guards a key square or mate, then force it to move — with a check, a capture or a threat it must answer — and strike where it no longer defends.

A fork is one piece attacking two targets at once. Look for a knight, pawn or queen move that lands where it hits the king (or a bigger piece) and a second undefended unit on the same turn — the opponent can save only one.

In a mate in three every move must be forcing; the defender should never get a free tempo. Find the check or threat that herds the king, calculate the single defence to each, and confirm the net closes on the third move.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position sur l'échiquier

Blancs : roi b1, dame g4, tour d1 h1, fou d2 b5, cavalier c3 d4, pion c2 f2 g2 h2 c5 e5.

Noirs : roi c8, dame a3, tour d8 h8, fou a4, cavalier b4 e7, pion d5 e6 a7 b7 f7 g7 h7.

The position in numbers

White are ahead by 2 points of material (37 against 35; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on b1, the black king on c8.

It is Black to move on move 14, with 37 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 6 pawns, Black 7. No file is fully open, so the heavy pieces have to be pried in. Half-open for Black: c.

White hold the bishop pair, an edge in open lines. The Black king has 2 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution et explication

Ligne principale

14... Bxc2+ 15. Nxc2 Qb3+ 16. Ka1 Nxc2#

Move by move

  • 14… Bxc2+ — fou to c2 (capture) with check
  • 15. Nxc2 — cavalier to c2 (capture)
  • Qb3+ — dame to b3 with check
  • 16. Ka1 — roi to a1
  • Nxc2# — cavalier to c2 (capture) and it is checkmate
