How to recognize this tactic
A fork is one piece attacking two targets at once. Look for a knight, pawn or queen move that lands where it hits the king (or a bigger piece) and a second undefended unit on the same turn — the opponent can save only one.
General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.
Position sur l'échiquier
Blancs : roi g3, dame g4, fou d3, cavalier e4, pion a2 c4 g5 f6.
Noirs : roi g8, dame d8, fou d4 c6, pion e3 e5 a6 g6 h7.
Il y a 8 pièces blanches et 9 noires sur l'échiquier ; la position du problème survient après le coup 41.
The position in numbers
Black are ahead by 1 points of material (19 against 20; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.
The white king stands on g3, the black king on g8.
It is White to move on move 41, with 29 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.
White keeps 4 pawns, Black 5. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): b, d — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: e, h.
Black hold the bishop pair, an edge in open lines. The White king has 5 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Pourquoi ça marche
- Excellent coup ! dame en e6 maintient la pression (+6.0).
- Excellent coup ! dame en c6 maintient la pression (+6.1).
- Vous gagnez une pièce : fou.
- Si à la place Kf8, alors Qxc6 et vous gagnez fou.
Move by move
- 41. Qe6+ — dame to e6 with check
- Kf8 — roi to f8
- 42. Qxc6 — dame to c6 (capture)
Types de ce problème
Fourchette royale
