How to recognize this tactic
A fork is one piece attacking two targets at once. Look for a knight, pawn or queen move that lands where it hits the king (or a bigger piece) and a second undefended unit on the same turn — the opponent can save only one.
General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.
Position sur l'échiquier
Blancs : roi g2, dame f3, tour e2, pion h2 b3 g3 f4 d5.
Noirs : roi g8, dame c3, tour b1, pion b4 d6 h6 f7 g7.
The position in numbers
Material is level — 19 points of pieces on each side (pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9).
The white king stands on g2, the black king on g8.
It is White to move on move 33, with 26 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.
White keeps 5 pawns, Black 5. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): a, c, e — natural highways for the rooks and queen.
The White king has 2 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.
Solution et explication
Ligne principale
33. Re8+ Kh7 34. Qe4+ g6 35. Qxb1
Move by move
- 33. Re8+ — tour to e8 with check
- Kh7 — roi to h7
- 34. Qe4+ — dame to e4 with check
- g6 — pion to g6
- 35. Qxb1 — dame to b1 (capture)
Types de ce problème
Fourchette royale
