How to recognize this tactic
Mate in two usually opens with a forcing move — a check, a capture or an unstoppable threat — that strips the king of squares or defenders, so the follow-up mate becomes unavoidable. Look for the first move that leaves the opponent only losing replies.
General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.
Position sur l'échiquier
Blancs : roi g1, dame h7, tour e1, fou c2, cavalier e5, pion a2 b2 f2 g2 h3 d4.
Noirs : roi f8, dame d6, tour a8 d8, fou d5 a7, cavalier g3, pion a6 b7 c7 f7.
The position in numbers
Black are ahead by 6 points of material (26 against 32; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.
The white king stands on g1, the black king on f8.
It is White to move on move 26, with 44 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.
White keeps 6 pawns, Black 4. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): e — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: c.
Black hold the bishop pair, an edge in open lines. The White king has 1 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.
Solution et explication
Ligne principale
26. Nd7+ Rxd7 27. Qh8#
Move by move
- 26. Nd7+ — cavalier to d7 with check
- Rxd7 — tour to d7 (capture)
- 27. Qh8# — dame to h8 and it is checkmate
