How to recognize this tactic
In a mate in three every move must be forcing; the defender should never get a free tempo. Find the check or threat that herds the king, calculate the single defence to each, and confirm the net closes on the third move.
General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.
Position sur l'échiquier
Blancs : roi f2, dame g5, cavalier h5, pion e3 g3 f4 a6.
Noirs : roi f7, dame h1, fou b8, cavalier e2, pion c4 d5 f5 e6 a7.
The position in numbers
Black are ahead by 4 points of material (16 against 20; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.
The white king stands on f2, the black king on f7.
It is White to move on move 42, with 15 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.
White keeps 4 pawns, Black 5. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): b, h — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: c, d.
The White king has 1 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.
Solution et explication
Ligne principale
42. Qg7+ Ke8 43. Nf6+ Kd8 44. Qd7#
Move by move
- 42. Qg7+ — dame to g7 with check
- Ke8 — roi to e8
- 43. Nf6+ — cavalier to f6 with check
- Kd8 — roi to d8
- 44. Qd7# — dame to d7 and it is checkmate
