White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king b1, queen d6, rook a1, pawn a2 b2 g2 h2 e6.

Black: king b8, queen c7, rook a7, knight e5, pawn a4 f5 b7 g7 h7.

8 white and 9 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 25.

The position in numbers

Black are ahead by 3 points of material (19 against 22; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on b1, the black king on b8.

It is White to move on move 25, with 25 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 5 pawns, Black 5. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): c, d — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: f.

The White king has 0 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

25. Qf8+ Qc8 26. e7 Ra5 27. Qxc8+ Kxc8 28. e8=Q+

Why it works

  • Great move! queen to f8 keeps the pressure (+6.3).
  • Well found: pawn to e7 (+6.4).
  • Precise: queen to c8 is the top choice (+6.8).
  • Best move. pawn to e8 is exactly what the engine plays (+6.8).
  • You win a piece — the queen.
  • If instead Qc8, then e7 and you stay on top.

Move by move

  • 25. Qf8+ — queen to f8 with check
  • Qc8 — queen to c8
  • 26. e7 — pawn to e7
  • Ra5 — rook to a5
  • 27. Qxc8+ — queen to c8 (capture) with check
  • Kxc8 — king to c8 (capture)
  • 28. e8=Q+ — pawn to e8 with check

Types in this puzzle

Win the pinned piece

The pinned piece cannot run — attack it again and win it.

A pinned piece cannot flee, which means you can win it outright by attacking it one more time. Count attackers against defenders: if you outnumber them, the piece is yours. The best extra attacker is a pawn, since it costs less than anything it might capture. Do not rush the capture — build up the pressure first, then harvest.

Only move

Everything else loses — find the only move that holds.

An only move is a position where everything loses except one single continuation. You cannot play "by hand" here: run through fundamentally different defenses — run away, block, trade, counterattack — and discard the ones that fail. The hallmark of these puzzles is that the obvious moves lose quickly while the solution often looks strange. First understand exactly what the threat is — then the one saving move reveals itself.

Queen trap

The strongest piece ventures too far — and cannot come back.

A queen trap catches the strongest piece after it ventures too far and finds no way home. The usual story is a queen grabbing a distant pawn — the classic poisoned pawn. The warning signs: the queen has few retreat squares, and enemy minor pieces cut them off one by one, gaining tempo with every move. Before your queen snacks on a pawn in enemy territory, count her escape routes — fewer than two means stay home.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #910.

SP-910 · RampartScout — A knight in the corner and the king out on the wing (b/g); like every family, it is closed under mirror twins.

The king starts on b1, the rooks on a1 and d1, the queen on c1.

From b1 the king makes the longest journey Chess960 allows when castling short: five squares to g1.

The bishops stand on f1 and g1; their long diagonals reach a6 and a7 once the e- and f-pawns step aside.

Every pawn on the second rank is defended from the very first move.

The setup belongs to the RampartScout family; read right to left it becomes position 52.

The engine's main line opens with e4, putting a pawn straight into the centre.
