White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king h2, queen c3, rook d1 f1, bishop e4, knight c1 e2, pawn a2 f2 g2 b3.

Black: king f8, queen a8, rook h5 g8, bishop b5, knight c8, pawn c5 a7 f7 h7.

11 white and 10 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 16.

The position in numbers

White are ahead by 3 points of material (32 against 29; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on h2, the black king on f8.

It is White to move on move 16, with 2 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle. White are in check right now, so every reply must answer the check.

White keeps 4 pawns, Black 4. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): d, e — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: c, h.

The White king has 1 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

16. Kg1 Qxe4 17. Rd8+ Be8 18. Ng3 Rh1+ 19. Kxh1

Why it works

  • Great move! king to g1 keeps the pressure (+3.2).
  • Spot on — rook to d8 (+3.2).
  • Strong! knight to g3 is the sharp choice (+3.2).
  • Great move! king to h1 keeps the pressure (+3.3).
  • You reach a winning position (+3.3).
  • If instead Qxe4, then Rd8+ and you stay on top.

Move by move

  • 16. Kg1 — king to g1
  • Qxe4 — queen to e4 (capture)
  • 17. Rd8+ — rook to d8 with check
  • Be8 — bishop to e8
  • 18. Ng3 — knight to g3
  • Rh1+ — rook to h1 with check
  • 19. Kxh1 — king to h1 (capture)

Types in this puzzle

Sacrifice attack

Give up material to unleash a decisive attack.

A sacrificial attack gives up material on purpose to rip the king's shelter open and launch a decisive assault. The sac is sound when you get concrete assets in return: open lines to the king, tempi, pieces ready to pour in. The signs: a poorly sheltered king, your forces aimed at its home, defenders stranded far away. The iron rule is to calculate, not hope — once the material is gone, there is no way back.

King evacuation

The king walks out of the danger zone on its own feet.

King evacuation: when the shelter collapses, the king walks out of the attack on his own feet — sometimes across half the board. A series of precise king moves carries him out of the firing zone, and the enemy attack dissolves. The signs: no direct defense works, but there is a route over unattacked squares to a quiet corner. Calculate the entire journey in advance — a king stranded halfway usually dies there.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #200.

SP-200 · BastionGuard — A c- or f-file king and two knights on inner files (b–g).

The king starts on f1, the rooks on d1 and h1, the queen on a1.

The queenside rook already stands on d1, so castling long moves only the king, from f1 to c1.

The bishops stand on b1 and e1; their long diagonals reach h7 and a5 once the c- and d-pawns step aside.

The pawn on g2 is defended by the king alone — the same soft spot f2 is in the classical setup.

The setup belongs to the BastionGuard family; read right to left it becomes position 669.

The engine's main line opens with c4.

Morozov Balance Index: 13 of 100 — class D — largest edge. Engine evaluation of the starting position: +41 centipawns for White (depth 45, 400 000 000 nodes).
