How to recognize this tactic
A trapped piece has no safe square. Spot an enemy piece that has wandered offside or been hemmed in, then play the move that takes away its last escape and wins it — often a quiet pawn push or a covering minor piece.
General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.
Position sur l'échiquier
Blancs : roi b2, tour f1 d2, cavalier c3 e5, pion a2 b3 d4 f4 g4.
Noirs : roi d6, dame e3, fou h4 d7, pion d5 c6 h6 a7 b7 g7.
The position in numbers
Material is level — 21 points of pieces on each side (pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9).
The white king stands on b2, the black king on d6.
It is White to move on move 36, with 40 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.
White keeps 5 pawns, Black 6. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): e — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: c, h.
Black hold the bishop pair, an edge in open lines. The White king has 5 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.
Solution et explication
Ligne principale
36. Rd3 Qxd3 37. Nxd3
Pourquoi ça marche
- Excellent coup ! tour en d3 maintient la pression (+4.4).
- Excellent coup ! cavalier en d3 maintient la pression (+4.4).
- Vous gagnez une pièce : dame.
- Si à la place Qxd3, alors Nxd3 et vous gagnez dame.
Move by move
- 36. Rd3 — tour to d3
- Qxd3 — dame to d3 (capture)
- 37. Nxd3 — cavalier to d3 (capture)
Types de ce problème
Coup tranquille
