How to recognize this tactic
Deflection drags a defender away from its duty. Identify the enemy piece that guards a key square or mate, then force it to move — with a check, a capture or a threat it must answer — and strike where it no longer defends.
General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

ディフレクション（そらし）は番人を持ち場から追い払う手筋です。サクリファイスや交換によって、守っている駒やマスから引き離します。まず要の守り手を見つけましょう。その駒がいなくなればメイトや駒得が実現する、という駒です。次に、その駒が無視できない手を探します。たいていは駒取りです。駒を出し惜しみしないこと。番人の排除でクイーンが取れるかメイトになるなら、犠牲は何倍にもなって返ってきます。
静かな手
王手でも駒取りでもない——それでもこの控えめな一手が勝負を決めます。
静かな手はチェックもかけず、何も取りません。それでいて、防ぎようのない脅威を作ったり、キングの最後のマスを奪ったりして勝負を決めるのです。これは最も難しい種類の手です。目は派手な一撃を探し回りますが、勝つのは慎ましい一手なのです。手がかりはこうです。強制的な試みがすべて防がれるなら、脅威を強めるかマスを奪うだけの手を探しましょう。自分に問う癖をつけてください。取らず、王手もかけず、静かに態勢を強めたらどうなるか、と。
