White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king f1, queen h6, rook c1, bishop g6, pawn a2 d2 e2 g2 f3 g5.

Black: king d8, queen b7, rook c8, bishop e7 a8, pawn c3 e5 a7 d7.

10 white and 9 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 25.

The position in numbers

Black are ahead by 1 points of material (23 against 24; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on f1, the black king on d8.

It is White to move on move 25, with 38 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 6 pawns, Black 4. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): b, h — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: c.

Black hold the bishop pair, an edge in open lines. The White king has 4 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

25. Qh8+ Kc7 26. Rxc3+ Qc6 27. Qxe5+ Kd8 28. Rxc6

Why it works

  • Great move! queen to h8 keeps the pressure (+5.7).
  • Spot on — rook to c3 (+5.5).
  • Precise: queen to e5 is the top choice (+6.0).
  • Best move. rook to c6 is exactly what the engine plays (+6.4).
  • You win a piece — the queen.
  • If instead Kc7, then Rxc3+ and you stay on top.

Move by move

  • 25. Qh8+ — queen to h8 with check
  • Kc7 — king to c7
  • 26. Rxc3+ — rook to c3 (capture) with check
  • Qc6 — queen to c6
  • 27. Qxe5+ — queen to e5 (capture) with check
  • Kd8 — king to d8
  • 28. Rxc6 — rook to c6 (capture)

Types in this puzzle

Win the pinned piece

The pinned piece cannot run — attack it again and win it.

A pinned piece cannot flee, which means you can win it outright by attacking it one more time. Count attackers against defenders: if you outnumber them, the piece is yours. The best extra attacker is a pawn, since it costs less than anything it might capture. Do not rush the capture — build up the pressure first, then harvest.

Overload

One defender guards two things — it cannot do both jobs.

Overloading exploits a defender with two jobs at once — guarding a piece and covering a mating square, for instance. It cannot do both: your first strike forces it to handle one duty and abandon the other. Find the overworked piece by asking what happens to each of its charges if it gets distracted. Then hit one target and collect the other — an overloaded defender only pretends to defend.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #481.

SP-481 · BastionGuard — The king starts one file off-centre, on c or f, with neither knight in a corner.

The king starts on f1, the rooks on c1 and h1, the queen on b1.

Castling ends where it always does: king to g1 and rook to f1 on the short side, king to c1 and rook to d1 on the long one.

A bishop starts in the corner on a1: it has a single diagonal, which the b-pawn unlocks, running out to h8.

One second-rank pawn starts with no defender at all: d2.

The setup belongs to the BastionGuard family; read right to left it becomes position 571.

The engine's main line opens with c4.
