White to move — find the best continuation

How to recognize this tactic

In Chess960 the pieces start on unfamiliar squares, so tactics appear earlier and from unusual angles. Do not trust classical patterns — read the actual lines of the bishops, the rooks and the queen from where they really stand in this position.

This position hides a concrete tactic that wins material or mates. Start with the most forcing candidate moves — checks, captures and threats — and calculate each to a clear end before choosing; the winning line is usually the one the opponent cannot meet.

General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.

Position on the board

White: king g1, queen h4, rook a1, knight f2, pawn b2 a4 g6.

Black: king g8, queen f5, rook a8, knight d8, pawn a5 c6 h6 b7.

7 white and 8 black pieces are on the board; the puzzle position arises after move 29.

The position in numbers

Black are ahead by 1 points of material (20 against 21; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.

The white king stands on g1, the black king on g8.

It is White to move on move 29, with 36 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.

White keeps 3 pawns, Black 4. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): d, e, f — natural highways for the rooks and queen. Half-open for White: c, h.

The White king has 4 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.

Solution & explanation

Main line

29. Qxh6 Ne6 30. Qh7+ Kf8 31. Qh8+ Ke7 32. Qxa8

Why it works

  • Great move! queen to h6 keeps the pressure (+4.4).
  • Well found: queen to h7 (+5.0).
  • Precise: queen to h8 is the top choice (+5.2).
  • Great move! queen to a8 keeps the pressure (+5.0).
  • You win a piece — the rook.
  • If instead Ne6, then Qh7+ and you stay on top.

Move by move

  • 29. Qxh6 — queen to h6 (capture)
  • Ne6 — knight to e6
  • 30. Qh7+ — queen to h7 with check
  • Kf8 — king to f8
  • 31. Qh8+ — queen to h8 with check
  • Ke7 — king to e7
  • 32. Qxa8 — queen to a8 (capture)

Types in this puzzle

Skewer

A line attack forces the valuable piece to move, exposing the one behind it.

A skewer is a pin turned inside out: the valuable piece stands in front and something cheaper hides behind it. The big piece must step aside, and you collect the one that was sheltering in its shadow. Scan for the enemy king or queen sharing a file, rank or diagonal with another enemy piece. The deadliest version comes with check — the king moves, the rook behind it dies.

About this position

These pieces come from starting position #564.

SP-564 · ThroneGuard — King on a central file (d/e) with both knights on inner files — the classic-type setup.

The king starts on e1, the rooks on a1 and g1, the queen on h1.

Castling ends where it always does: king to g1 and rook to f1 on the short side, king to c1 and rook to d1 on the long one.

The bishops stand on b1 and c1; their long diagonals reach h7 and h6 once the c- and d-pawns step aside.

The pawn on e2 is defended by the king alone — the same soft spot f2 is in the classical setup.

The setup belongs to the ThroneGuard family; read right to left it becomes position 494.

The engine's main line opens with g3.

Morozov Balance Index: 26 of 100 — class C — noticeable edge. Engine evaluation of the starting position: +34 centipawns for White (depth 43, 400 000 000 nodes).
