How to recognize this tactic
A trapped piece has no safe square. Spot an enemy piece that has wandered offside or been hemmed in, then play the move that takes away its last escape and wins it — often a quiet pawn push or a covering minor piece.
General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.
Position sur l'échiquier
Blancs : roi g1, dame c2, tour a1 d5, fou e2, cavalier b6, pion f2 g2 h2 a3 b4 e4.
Noirs : roi g8, dame e6, tour b8 f8, fou f6 c8, pion e5 a6 g6 b7 f7 h7.
The position in numbers
Material is level — 31 points of pieces on each side (pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9).
The white king stands on g1, the black king on g8.
It is White to move on move 21, with 56 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.
White keeps 6 pawns, Black 6. Files fully open (no pawns of either colour): c, d — natural highways for the rooks and queen.
Black hold the bishop pair, an edge in open lines. The White king has 2 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.
Solution et explication
Ligne principale
21. Qc7 Qc6 22. Qxb8 Be6 23. Qa7
Pourquoi ça marche
- Excellent coup ! dame en c7 maintient la pression (+3.8).
- Excellent coup ! dame en b8 maintient la pression (+3.9).
- Excellent coup ! dame en a7 maintient la pression (+4.3).
- Vous gagnez une pièce : tour.
- Si à la place Qc6, alors Qxb8 et vous gagnez tour.

Types de ce problème
Coup tranquille
