How to recognize this tactic
A trapped piece has no safe square. Spot an enemy piece that has wandered offside or been hemmed in, then play the move that takes away its last escape and wins it — often a quiet pawn push or a covering minor piece.
General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.
Position sur l'échiquier
Blancs : roi h1, dame d1, tour a1 f1, fou h2, cavalier d2 a4, pion a2 g2 c3 h3 c4 e4.
Noirs : roi g8, dame a3, tour d8 f8, fou e7, cavalier e6 f6, pion c6 d6 a7 b7 f7 g7 h7.
Il y a 13 pièces blanches et 14 noires sur l'échiquier ; la position du problème survient après le coup 17.
The position in numbers
Black are ahead by 1 points of material (34 against 35; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.
The white king stands on h1, the black king on g8.
It is White to move on move 17, with 35 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.
White keeps 6 pawns, Black 7. No file is fully open, so the heavy pieces have to be pried in. Half-open for White: b, d, f.
The White king has 1 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.
Solution et explication
Ligne principale
17. Nb1 Qxa4 18. Qxa4
Pourquoi ça marche
- Excellent coup ! cavalier en b1 maintient la pression (+3.6).
- Excellent coup ! dame en a4 maintient la pression (+3.8).
- Vous gagnez une pièce : dame.
- Si à la place Qxa4, alors Qxa4 et vous gagnez dame.
Move by move
- 17. Nb1 — cavalier to b1
- Qxa4 — dame to a4 (capture)
- 18. Qxa4 — dame to a4 (capture)
Types de ce problème
Coup tranquille
